This week, I want to introduce you to Amy Cuddy. If you haven’t seen her TED talk, watch it! Then buy her book, Presence.
My personal favorite hack from Amy- replace “I’m nervous” with “I’m excited” both in conversation and in your internal dialog.
Pure brilliance, and I swear by its effectiveness in lowing my stress levels in everything from giving a speech, interviewing, or even networking on an off night.
WHY IT WORKS:
The idea of “nervous” raises the stress hormone cortisol (the fight or flight hormone) and testosterone, while the idea of “excited” keeps that elevated testosterone without raising cortisol levels.
Here is the awesome part- by telling your brain that what it’s experiencing is “excitement”, not “nervousness”, it responds by lowing that stress hormone, and you actually switch over to excited.
And when that cortisol level drops, you can unlock yourself. You won’t stumble on your words as much, or forget important details you want to talk about. Really amazing stuff- seriously, buy her book. I guarantee you won’t regret it.
